Europe’s rising popularity as a global educational destination is due to its world-class universities, affordable fees, and welcoming environment. Social media platforms have increased awareness, while traditional destinations like the USA, Australia, Canada, and UK have lost their appeal. What’s more the advantages of the USA, Australia, Canada, and UK are being eroded by policy changes, uncertainties, and stringent norms.

In an interview with Financial Express Online, Bhargav Modi, Business Director of EduGo Abroad, outlines some of the main causes of the rise in popularity of European countries during a period when the glamour of the Big Four countries appears to be fading.

Are European universities witnessing the trend over the Big 4 destinations?

We at EduGo Abroad have facilitated European university studies for the past 13 years. We have observed that an ensemble of world class universities, affordable fee structure and welcoming environment have over the years played a crucial role in increasing number of students opting to study in Europe.

There are, however, multiple reasons for the surge in popularity of Europe as a global educational destination. For instance, awareness amongst students about European universities has recently increased, especially because social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram have opened avenues for students to discover more options.

Showcasing the European universities on social media has helped the students become more aware as they can now do detailed research, get feedback and understand the quality of education even as they sit at home.

Also, it has been seen that the Big 4- USA, Australia, Canada and UK, which were preferred conventional destinations for students opting to study abroad, have lost their advantage due to policy changes, uncertainties and stringent norms that have made it less convenient for foreign students. This surge that is being seen is not sudden, but a long-drawn process, and we must add that it was long due.

Which courses are preferred by Indian students in European universities?

Europe is a vast continent, and there are different programs popular in every country. So, for example, in France, Brand and Luxury Management, and all the business management programs are majorly popular because it is the home of top business schools in the world.

For someone aspiring to pursue Automobile Engineering or Industry 4.0 kind of program or any engineering programs or engineering management programs, then Germany is their go to option. Likewise, if someone wishes to pursue IT and Pharma programs, then Ireland is for that. For aspirants who wish to build a career in fashion design then Italy is for them. If someone wants to go into renewable energies, then there are countries like Denmark for that.

What are the go-to destinations for Indian students aspiring to go to Europe?

Many South East Asian students also opt to study in European nations such as France, Germany, and Ireland. Although obtaining a visa is now simpler and easier, students still have access to some of the most prestigious and historic universities and can select from a wide range of courses.

Also, the living costs and tuition costs are lower in Europe as compared to the Big4. Because European countries are more lenient about part-time work and post-study/career search after graduation, students who complete their course will have plenty of job opportunities. Europe is home to some of the world’s happiest and safest countries in the world. Thus, it automatically becomes an excellent choice for students.

What has been the impact of changes in foreign education policies on overall overseas education trends?

The global education scenario has evolved multi-fold in the recent past. Changes in foreign education policies have led countries like Germany to streamline their Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) or Academic Evaluation Centre that verifies the authenticity of academic documents of the students.

They are also working towards reducing the turnaround time to get the APS certificate for students, after which they can submit their visa file. There’s a lot of positivity at the policy level for France too. The country announced recently that it wishes to host 30,000 Indian students in France by 2030. Also, France offers some amazing courses at a very affordable price. After crunching numbers, we found that France does have benefits that give it an edge over the conventional destinations.

What are the expected trends as compared to the future of foreign education in Europe? Is it going to be a sustainable trend?

Studying in Europe is 100% sustainable. While Germany, France and Ireland offer quality education at a fee considerably lower than the Big 4, those who wish to pursue low-cost education, Latvia, Poland and Malta are a great option too.

One cannot undervalue the exposure and scope of perspective you build abroad in addition to the world-class education European universities offer. That being said, it isn’t a given that foreign education has to be expensive. For instance, a lot of courses are on offer from triple-accredited universities in France where the fee is comparable, and might even be less, than the fees institutions back here in India might charge.

As I said, European education is already economical compared to other countries. If the policies don’t change over the years, we can only expect that Europe will keep attracting more students soon.
