In midweek, we covered various claims from South America which made it very clear Diego León is on the verge of a transfer to Manchester United.
The 17-year-old currently plays for Cerro Porteño in his native Paraguay. Due to FIFA rules aimed at stopping exploitation of young footballers, the youngster wouldn’t be able to physically move to Manchester United until he turns 18.
That happens in April 2025, so it’s a transfer being built ahead of the next summer window.
Caser Luis Merlo, a well known journalist in South America, has added to the chorus of claims stating the move is agreed and Diego León will potentially become the first Paraguayan to play for Manchester United.
According to his story, the Red Devils will pay an initial $4m plus a further $1m in easy to achieve bonuses. On top of that there’s a potential further $4m based on longer term objectives.
The left-back is set to arrive in June 2025, and will be given a contract until 2030.
On Thursday, Sport Witness commissioned Pedro Torres, the Paraguayan journalist who initially broke the story, to write an explanation of the player’s journey and his talents. You can read that via the link below.
