Monarch brings MK-V electric narrow-track tractor to Europe

Californian manufacturer Monarch Tractor is expanding into Europe with its MK-V electric compact tractor, which has been available in the USA since 2023, as reported by the trade publication Agrarheute. The company has now founded a subsidiary in Belgium for this purpose. The tractor, which has been specially developed for use in dairy farms, orchards and vineyards, is designed to help farmers reduce their carbon footprint and counteract labor shortages.

Long-running times and autonomous functions

According to the manufacturer, the 30 to 50 kW MK-V has a battery runtime of up to 14 hours. Monarch also offers a replaceable additional battery for 24-hour operation. With integrated 360-degree camera monitoring and artificial intelligence, the tractor can also carry out pre-programmed tasks autonomously or follow a person in “Follow Me” mode, for example when they are distributing seed on foot.

Interfaces for smart farming and data evaluation

In addition to the Cat I/II three-point hydraulics, the MK-V is equipped with numerous sensors and cameras for recording real-time operating data and is intended to serve as a robust platform for intelligent implements. For example, a touchscreen can be used to evaluate harvest data and plant health indicators or adjust the settings of implements. Farmers can also monitor and control their autonomous tractors remotely via telemetry. The “WingspanAI” app is used for this purpose and is designed to enable remote maintenance and planning of various processes.

However, with a base price of around 83,000 euros plus monthly costs for connectivity and autonomous functions, the Monarch MK-V is not a cheap pleasure – despite various US funding programs for emission-free agricultural technology. Monarch currently offers the MK-V in three variants for different purposes: “Standard”, “Dairy” with a sliding blade and “Utility” with a front loader.

Conventional German e-tractor

Fendt, the market leader for tractors in Germany, began series production of its first e100 V Vario electric tractor in November 2024. The 50 kW narrow-track tractor is designed for light work and runs for 1.5 to 7 hours per battery charge, depending on use. An optional methanol fuel cell can extend the range. Unlike Monarch, Fendt’s first e-tractor does not have any autonomous functions – it is essentially a conventional tractor with an electric drive. Despite higher costs, the vehicle is aimed at sustainability-oriented customers. No further electric models are currently planned.
