Officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a welfare check at the Rio Hotel and Casino on February 15, 2026, after family members reported the pair missing from a youth cheerleading event. The call came in around 10:45 a.m. when the mother and child failed to appear for the competition. Police found the two unresponsive inside their room that Sunday evening. The incident unfolded amid a trip from Utah meant for athletic fun and family bonding.
Lieutenant Robert Price described the scene as “a sad and tragic incident” during a briefing, extending condolences to the family. Investigators noted no signs of forced entry, ruling out external involvement early on. The case quickly classified as an apparent murder-suicide pending further review.

The mother, Tawnia McGeehan, aged 44, traveled with her daughter, Addi Smith, 7, from Utah for the cheerleading competition.
