Hollywood likes to sell the idea that talent is manufactured in a classroom, polished through years of scene study and monologue drills. Yet a surprising number of the industry’s most recognizable faces skipped that path entirely, landing roles through luck, persistence, or a friend who happened to know an agent. Their stories complicate the notion that formal training is a prerequisite for great screen work, even if it remains a smart safety net for most.
1. Johnny Depp

Depp’s route into acting had nothing to do with ambition or study. He was a teenage musician who dropped out of high school to chase a career in rock bands, and started playing guitar at age 12 and eventually dropped out of high school to pursue a career as a musician. Acting was never part of the plan until his friend Nicolas Cage stepped in.
Depp has been direct about the lack of formal schooling behind his career. He did not attend Juilliard, the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, or any other prestigious acting program, and “I never really took any ,” Depp told Vanity Fair. Cage’s encouragement led to an audition for A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Depp himself later admitted “I didn’t know what I was doing. I had no training.”
