What’s striking about the three names below is how ordinary their post-Hollywood lives turned out to be, and how deliberately they chose that ordinariness over the noise most people assume comes with a hit movie credit.
Peter Ostrum: from Charlie Bucket to a Cornell-trained veterinarian
Peter Ostrum played Charlie Bucket in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and it remains his only screen credit. Ostrum was 12 years old when selected by talent agents for Willy Wonka, and though he enjoyed the experience of shooting the film, he opted not to sign a three-film contract when it was over. He tried a handful of other auditions afterward, but nothing clicked, and the pull toward acting simply faded.
What replaced it was a fascination that started on set, oddly enough. Ostrum became interested in his family’s horses when he returned from shooting Willy Wonka and was particularly influenced by the veterinarian who tended to them, later receiving a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984 and retiring by late 2023.
