There’s a particular kind of family dynamic that only exists in Hollywood: a kid becomes the breadwinner before they’ve lost their baby teeth. It sounds like the plot of a satire, but it happened again and again throughout entertainment history, often with messy financial and emotional consequences. Macaulay Culkin
Before he was a teenager, Macaulay Culkin was arguably the most bankable kid in American cinema, thanks largely to the Home Alone franchise. He famously “divorced” his parents when he was 15, suing his parents for $17 million in earnings during a custody dispute that also saw them removed as his legal guardians. His parents, Kit Culkin and Patricia Brentrup, were never particularly wealthy on their own, which made the gap between his earnings and theirs especially stark.
The money had been placed into a trust that his parents controlled, and the couple ended up pocketing around 15% of their son’s earnings per film as his de facto managers.
