1. San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and fire
The magnitude 7.9 earthquake that struck San Francisco on April 18, 1906, ruptured gas lines and water mains across the city, and the fires that followed burned for four days, destroying roughly 28,000 buildings and leaving a large share of the population homeless. City leaders and business owners moved with unusual speed, partly out of fear that insurers and investors would abandon the region if reconstruction stalled. Within three years, most of the downtown core had been rebuilt, often using the same street grid but with stricter fire codes and new steel-frame construction techniques borrowed from Chicago’s own recovery decades earlier.
