The script for one of the most analyzed scenes in American cinema literally just said “Travis talks to mirror.” Robert De Niro improvised this line of dialogue during the filming of Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, in a scene where his character fantasizes about drawing his gun while looking in the mirror, and the script simply stated “Travis talks to mirror,” meaning De Niro built the entire moment while the cameras rolled. There was no dialogue to fall back on, just a stage direction and an actor left to fill the silence.
