Every so often a science fiction film lands in a scene by pure coincidence and then, decades later, the world catches up to it. Some filmmakers had genuine consultants and research teams trying to imagine what was coming. Others just guessed, and got lucky in ways that still surprise people watching these movies today. Here are eight films that turned out to be far more accurate than anyone expected when they first hit theaters.
1. Minority Report (2002)
Before the script was even finalized, Steven Spielberg brought together a group of scientists and futurists for what became known as a think tank summit in 1999. Spielberg invited fifteen experts, futurists, architects, and computer scientists to a Santa Monica hotel for a three day think tank summit, including futurist Peter Schwartz and computer scientist Jaron Lanier, who later helped develop Microsoft Kinect. Their job was to imagine what Washington D.C. might look like decades ahead, and the result shaped nearly every piece of technology in the film.
The predictions held up surprisingly well. Gesture interfaces, retina scanning, personalized advertising, predictive policing software, autonomous vehicles, and facial recognition billboards have all become reality, though not always in a convenient way.
