Every movie ending feels inevitable once it’s locked in place. Yet plenty of endings we now consider “classic” were never the first choice. Test screenings, nervous studios, and last minute rewrites have quietly rewritten some of the most memorable final scenes in film history, leaving behind alternate versions that only the most curious fans ever track down.
Some of these scrapped endings ended up on DVD extras or director’s cuts. Others sat forgotten for decades before resurfacing online. Here are nine films whose original conclusions looked nothing like what audiences actually saw in theaters.
I Am Legend (2007)
Will Smith’s post apocalyptic thriller originally ended on a much stranger, more morally complicated note than the version that hit theaters. Francis Lawrence’s 2007 film I Am Legend had two endings, and the alternate ending not shown in theaters is closer to the source novel, in which Robert is cornered in his basement laboratory along with fellow survivors Anna and Ethan, with the hemocytes having broken into the house. In that version, Neville realizes the infected aren’t mindless monsters at all, they’re intelligent beings trying to rescue one of their own that he had captured and experimented on.
