Every film that reaches theaters passes through some kind of gatekeeper first, whether that’s a national censorship board, a religious council, or a nervous studio executive worried about a diplomatic incident. Most movies slip through with a few trims here and there. Others hit a wall entirely, pulled from release or blocked outright because a government, religious authority, or cultural watchdog decided the content crossed a line.
The reasons vary wildly, from graphic violence and sexual content to political maps and religious depictions that some countries simply will not allow on a movie screen. Looking back at these cases says as much about global politics and shifting social norms as it does about the films themselves.
1. A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Anthony Burgess’s novel became one of the most infamous cases of self censorship in film history. Kubrick himself asked Warner Bros. to withdraw the film from UK distribution in 1973 after it was linked to a string of copycat crimes, and it stayed out of British cinemas until after his death in 1999.
Ireland kept an official ban in place for years, and South Korea did not allow the film to screen uncut until well into the 2000s. Singapore also restricted it for decades, treating its ultraviolence and disturbing themes as too corrosive for public viewing.
2. Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979)
