Madonna’s brief run as a disco backup dancer
In 1979, a young Madonna Ciccone was working odd jobs in New York and studying dance when French disco singer Patrick Hernandez held auditions for backing dancers ahead of a world tour built around his hit “Born to Be Alive.” He hired an aspiring Madonna as a backup dancer after she auditioned in New York, and she toured with him for three months across Europe and North America, gaining international exposure. The gig even took her briefly to Paris, where producers hoped to turn her into a French pop act.
Between 1979 and 1982, with a brief stint in Paris as a backup singer for the disco star, she performed with a number of post punk groups, but she soon tired of a backup role. That restlessness pushed her to form her own band…
