Hollywood loves a do-over, and most of the time audiences groan when a beloved film gets the remake treatment. Yet every so often, a new version comes along with better technology, a sharper script, or simply a director who understood what the first film was missing. These ten remakes didn’t just copy their source material, they built on it, and in each case critics and audiences eventually agreed the update was worth making.
The Fly (1986)
David Cronenberg took a campy 1958 creature feature and turned it into something far more unsettling and emotionally resonant. Loosely based on George Langelaan’s 1957 short story of the same name and the 1958 film of the same name, The Fly tells of an eccentric scientist who, after one of his experiments goes wrong, slowly turns into a fly-hybrid creature. The remake shifted tone from dark comedy to genuine tragedy, and audiences responded.
Despite being a gory remake of a classic made by a controversial, non-mainstream director, the film was a commercial success, the biggest of Cronenberg’s career, and was the top-grossing film in the United States for two weeks. Critics have only grown fonder of it since. With a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%, it’s often hailed as one of Cronenberg’s best, thanks in part to Goldblum’s layered performance. The 1958 original is still charming in its own way, but it simply doesn’t carry the same weight.
