After James Cameron’s first two films set an almost impossible bar, the Terminator series has spent decades trying to recapture that lightning. Terminator: Genisys stumbled in 2015, and four years later Dark Fate tried a full reset by bringing back Linda Hamilton and Cameron himself as producer. Paramount and Skydance’s Terminator: Dark Fate reboot, which hoped to revive the franchise after three failed attempts, bombed in its box office debut over the weekend with $29 million from 4,086 theaters, well behind expectations.
The frustrating part is that Dark Fate wasn’t a bad movie. Reviews were strong and audience sentiment was overwhelmingly positive heading into release, yet moviegoers simply didn’t turn up. The film faces losses of $120 million-plus after bombing in its global debut, earning just $29 million in the U.S. and $94.6 million overseas for a global total of $123.6 million.
