Television has a strange habit of canceling its most interesting experiments right when they’re finding their footing. Somewhere between the pilot episode and the natural end of a story, a network decides the numbers don’t add up, and a show vanishes before it ever gets the chance to become what it was supposed to be. Streaming has changed some of that calculus, giving old cult favorites a second life, but plenty of genuinely great series are still sitting in the archive, waiting for someone to notice.

The shows on this list weren’t failures of imagination. They were failures of timing, marketing, or plain bad luck. Here are eight that still have unfinished business.

Bryan Fuller’s whimsical dramedy about a pie maker who can bring the dead back to life, with a catch, was one of the most visually distinct shows network television has ever produced. The supporting cast included Kristin Chenoweth, Chi McBride, Swoosie Kurtz, Ellen Greene, and narration by Jim Dale, all contributing to the show’s distinct tone and heightened fairy tale world, and the series was praised for its rich visual style, playful storytelling, and emotional sincerity. Over just two seasons it collected an enormous amount of awards attention for such a short-lived series.
