There’s a version of Hollywood history that gets told in award show speeches and glossy profiles, full of overnight discoveries and life changing paydays. The reality behind most first sales is far scrappier. Long before their names carried weight, these writers handed over scripts for sums that look almost quaint next to the movies those pages eventually became.
Sylvester Stallone: the Rocky gamble that almost didn’t pay off
Stallone wrote Rocky in about three and a half days while he was broke, with a pregnant wife and almost no acting career to speak of. He had nothing in the bank, a pregnant wife, and a thin resume when he wrote the script in 1975. Producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff loved the story but wanted a proven star in the lead, not Stallone himself.
He turned down $360,000 for the film’s script despite having very little money because he refused to give up the role he had written for himself. He eventually agreed to a deal where he’d star, paid just over $30,000 for the script itself. It is one of the rare cases where walking away from serious money, at a moment when he genuinely had none, turned out to be the right call.
