Pop charts are full of ghosts. Songs that dominate radio for a summer, then vanish along with the people who made them, leaving behind only a melody everyone recognizes and a name nobody can quite place. Some of these stories end in obscurity. Others end in tragedy, disappearance, or a twist stranger than anything a songwriter could invent. Here are eight cases where the hit itself turned out to be the least interesting part of the story.
Zager and Evans and the song that predicted its own fate
In the summer of 1969, while Apollo 11 sat on the launch pad and Woodstock was still weeks away, a gloomy folk-rock tune from two guys out of Lincoln, Nebraska took over the airwaves. “In the Year 2525” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks commencing July 12, 1969. It also topped the charts in the UK, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand, an almost unheard of run for a record that cost the duo about five hundred dollars to make.
According to “The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders,” the record eventually sold more than 5 million copies, yet Denny Zager and Rick Evans never returned to the charts again. Their follow up single, about a man who nails his own wrist to a wall in penance, failed to catch on with anyone.
