Hobbiton started as a working sheep farm in the Waikato region before Peter Jackson’s crew turned it into the Shire for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. Rather than tear the set down after filming wrapped, the Alexander family kept it standing, and it eventually opened to the public as a permanent attraction. The location is actually on a family’s farm that is still an active sheep farm, and after shooting the last three Hobbit movies, they decided to keep the set on location and open it to the public.
The numbers tell their own story. Hobbiton’s general manager said that about 600,000 visitors came to the movie set last year, with a similar number projected for this year, including fans making the journey for the anniversary.
