There’s a particular kind of movie magic that happens when a lead actor barely opens their mouth. Instead of monologues explaining motivation, the audience gets a look, a gesture, a long pause that says more than a page of dialogue ever could. Some of cinema’s most memorable protagonists have built entire careers on saying almost nothing at all, and the numbers behind their silence are often more extreme than casual viewers realize.
1. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Counting the opening voice-overs, and discounting any grunts, Max Rockatansky has exactly 52 lines. Other line counts that include grunts and shorter utterances put the number closer to 63, but either way it’s a remarkably small amount of dialogue for a two-hour action epic. It is pretty clear that Hardy didn’t have a lot of lines of dialogue compared to the typical standard in a narrative film where lead actors usually have hundreds or thousands of dialogues.
This wasn’t an accident of editing. “Dialogue tends to slow things down,” Miller told The Telegraph recently, so he went back to the basics for Fury Road and Furiosa. The approach worked so well that it’s become something of a franchise signature, with the studio betting that Tom Hardy’s physicality could carry a story that words rarely interrupted.
