Somewhere around book number six, my nightstand started to look less like a reading list and more like a geological formation. Thrillers stacked on memoirs stacked on a chunky fantasy novel with a suspiciously glittery cover. I set out this year to work through the titles dominating the bestseller charts, the ones showing up in every airport bookstore and library hold list, just to see what’s actually driving readers to hit “buy” in 2026.
What I found was a stranger mix than I expected. Political tell-alls sitting next to dragon romances, a courtroom thriller from an author who’s been doing this since the Reagan administration, and a memoir from someone who used to run Facebook’s policy shop. Here’s what stood out, book by book.
The Widow by John Grisham
John Grisham doesn’t really need an introduction at this point, and The Widow spent four weeks at the top of the fiction bestseller list in 2025, which tells you something about his staying power. The book follows familiar Grisham terrain: legal maneuvering, small town secrets, and a protagonist who’s smarter than everyone around her assumes.
It’s not his most ambitious work, but that’s sort of the point with Grisham. Readers know what they’re getting, and he delivers it with the kind of efficiency that comes from writing dozens of these. I finished it in two sittings, which says more about the pacing than the prose.
