There’s a strange kind of fame that comes from writing exactly one song the whole world knows. It plays at every wedding, every sports arena, every summer barbecue for decades, yet almost nobody could name the artist behind it. Some of these musicians kept working quietly in the background, others walked away entirely, and a few found their way into surprising second acts far from the spotlight that once found them.

Chumbawamba’s 1997 anthem about getting knocked down and getting up again turned a scrappy anarchist collective from Leeds into an unlikely MTV staple. They suddenly found themselves on American talk shows, on the covers of magazines and signed to a major label, with their mainstream success lasting about four years while the Tubthumper album went triple platinum in the USA. Guitarist Boff Whalley left music behind for playwriting and long distance fell running, a hobby he has spoken about more than his pop career.

The band never actually stopped making records after the fame faded. They continued to perform and release new albums, releasing 17 in total with their most recent LP impacting in March 2010. They formally disbanded in 2012, though surviving members still show up occasionally for panel discussions and archival events tied to the UK’s punk history.
