Turn on the radio, scroll through a playlist, or watch an awards show, and it’s easy to assume the voice belting out a hit was raised somewhere between Nashville and Los Angeles. American culture has a gravitational pull that way. Yet a surprising number of the singers who feel most “American” in sound and style actually grew up thousands of miles away, shaped by entirely different countries, languages, and childhoods before ever setting foot on U.S. soil.
Some of these artists worked to soften their accents or lean into American music trends early in their careers, which only deepened the confusion. 1. Rihanna – Barbados
Rihanna’s music has been a fixture of American radio for two decades, but she did not grow up anywhere near the United States. Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in Saint Michael, Barbados, on February 20, 1988. She spent her childhood in Bridgetown before an American producer discovered her during a trip to the island.
