There’s a persistent idea that rock stars and pop icons trade classrooms for tour buses the moment fame arrives, never looking back. Yet a surprising number of musicians have done the opposite, squeezing lectures, lab work, and dissertations into schedules already packed with recording sessions and world tours. Some did it quietly, others made headlines when they finally walked across a graduation stage decades into their careers. Here are nine artists who proved that a platinum record and a diploma aren’t mutually exclusive.
Dexter Holland finished his PhD while fronting The Offspring

Dexter Holland had already sold millions of records with The Offspring when he decided to go back and finish what he’d started at the University of Southern California. He had earned a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences in 1988 and a master’s in molecular biology in 1990, right around the time his band was taking shape, but he suspended his studies to focus on music when the Offspring found success in 1994. The touring schedule that followed the massive success of “Smash” simply left no room for lab work.
Years later, Holland quietly returned to the research he’d left behind, chipping away at a dissertation between tour dates. In May 2017, he graduated from the University of Southern California with a doctorate in molecular biology. His dissertation focused on HIV…
