Radio programmers have always had a complicated relationship with songs that push too hard against the mood of the moment. Sometimes it’s the lyrics, sometimes it’s politics, and sometimes it’s just a title that makes a station manager nervous. Looking back at nine tracks that got pulled from playlists shows how much censorship standards have shifted, and how often a ban ended up boosting a song’s fame rather than burying it.

When Frankie Goes to Hollywood released their debut single in late 1983, nobody at the BBC seemed bothered at first. That changed in January 1984 when BBC Radio 1 DJ Mike Read announced on air that he would not play the single because of its suggestive lyrics, and the BBC placed a total ban on the record at about the same time. The lyrics were loaded with innuendo, and combined with the band’s open embrace of gay identity, it was simply too much for British broadcasters that year.

The ban backfired spectacularly. Within two weeks, “Relax” reached number one on the UK singles chart and stayed there for five weeks, and the BBC was forced to reverse its ban. The song ended up spending 37 consecutive weeks in the UK Top 40, 35 of which overlapped with the radio airplay ban.
