There’s a particular kind of muscle memory that comes from decades of appointment television. You didn’t need to see the show’s title card to know what was coming. A stopwatch ticking, a guitar riff kicking in, a voice-over booming through a living room speaker, and your brain already knew exactly where you were sitting and what night of the week it was.

These openings weren’t filler before the “real” content started. For a lot of us, they were the content, the ritual that made television feel like an event rather than just something playing in the background. Here are seven that still live somewhere in the back of the mind, decades after they first aired.

Since the show’s inception, the opening of 60 Minutes features a stopwatch. It wasn’t there from the very first episode though. The trademark stopwatch did not appear on the inaugural broadcast; it would not debut until several episodes later. Once it arrived, it never really left, becoming shorthand for serious television journalism.

The sound itself became almost as famous as the show. The stopwatch counts off each of the broadcast’s 60 minutes, starting from zero at the beginning of each show, and each time it appears it displays the elapsed time of the episode to that point. The physical watch used for decades eventually earned a spot in the Smithsonian, a strange but fitting tribute…
