Twelve years in the past — when Elliot Rodger killed six individuals and injured fourteen extra in Isla Vista, California after posting a Fb standing proclaiming, “The Incel Insurrection has already begun!” — his chosen moniker was nonetheless a reasonably obscure web time period. It had been coined, irony of ironies, by a lady. In 1997, “incel” first appeared in a weblog chronicling its creator’s courting difficulties — as she put it, her “involuntary celibacy.” By the early 2000s it had been co-opted by males who wielded it as a banner of their misogyny and nihilism.
