Some faces never got top billing, yet you’d know them anywhere. They showed up as the sheriff, the neighbor, the nervous lawyer or the guy who sold the hero a car. You may not have known their names, but you knew exactly who they were.
This list is a gallery of ten of those familiar performers, drawn from decades of film. I’ve stuck to career facts that are well documented and avoided guessing at anything recent. Some of these actors are still working, and some have passed away.
1. Steve Buscemi

Buscemi’s wiry, expressive look made him a fixture of independent cinema from the late 1980s onward. He stood out in Reservoir Dogs as Mr. Pink and in Fargo as the fidgety kidnapper Carl Showalter. He also became a regular in Coen brothers films.
Beyond acting, he directed episodes of television and starred as Nucky Thompson in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. He also voiced Randall in Monsters, Inc. Few actors move so easily between menace and comedy.
2. J.K. Simmons

For many viewers, Simmons is the commanding voice and stern face who could turn up in almost anything. He played editor J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films and later returned to the role in the Marvel universe. He also appeared in Juno as the supportive father.
