Television has always been quick to cancel. A show can disappear after a few weeks because of a bad time slot, a slow start or an executive’s hunch. Some of those shows didn’t stay gone, though.
Reruns, home video, streaming and word of mouth gave them second lives, often years after the final episode aired. Here are nine series that ran for a single season and still built loyal audiences.
Freaks and Geeks

This NBC high school comedy ran from 1999 to 2000. It was created by Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow. NBC pulled it from the schedule before every produced episode had aired, and the remaining ones turned up later on cable.
Its cast became a who’s who of later comedy, including Linda Cardellini, Seth Rogen, James Franco and Jason Segel. The DVD box set helped viewers find it after cancellation. Today it’s often cited as one of the best shows ever canceled too soon.
Firefly

Joss Whedon’s space western debuted on Fox in 2002. The network aired episodes out of order and skipped the intended pilot at first, which confused viewers. Fourteen episodes were produced, but only eleven aired during the original run.
Strong DVD sales and a devoted fan base, who call themselves Browncoats, kept the show alive. That support led to the 2005 feature film Serenity. Few canceled series have been given a theatrical sequel.
