Will Smith and Neo in The Matrix
Will Smith has said openly that he was offered the role of Neo in The Matrix. He passed on it and took the lead in Wild Wild West, which came out in 1999, the same year as The Matrix. The Wachowskis’ film went on to launch one of the most influential sci-fi franchises of its era.
Smith has described the decision as a misjudgment. He said he struggled to picture the film’s concept the way the filmmakers did. Keanu Reeves took the part and is still closely tied to it, and he returned to the role in The Matrix Resurrections in 2021.
Tom Selleck and Indiana Jones
Tom Selleck was a serious candidate for Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. He was already contracted to the television series Magnum, P.I., and CBS would not release him from his obligations. That scheduling conflict is the reason most accounts give for him leaving the film.
