‘It’s an out-of-body experience’
Karl Boyes is captain of Team Europe. He told the press conference: “Europe has been lucky enough to have played in the Mosconi Cup for many years. Team Asia has never had that experience, and trust me, when you walk out there it is an out-of-body experience.
“What Johann Chua achieved last night [at the Mansion Sports Hanoi Open Pool Championship in Vietnam] will help because that is a taste of what is to come.”
Johann Chua ‘undaunted by the pressure’
Johann Chua, fresh from victory at the Mansion Sports Hanoi Open, said he was looking forward to the event. He told the assembled media yesterday: “I think playing in Manila is one of my dreams for this kind of event.
“I’m really excited about it and I don’t think about the pressure at all. I’m looking forward to it and will just try and enjoy as much of it as possible.”

What have the players said about the Reyes Cup?
At a press conference in Manila yesterday to promote the event, Jayson Shaw, Britain’s top pool player, below, delivered the first bit of fighting talk of the tournament, downplaying any impact of Team Asia’s recent success. (Johann Chua, one of Team Asia’s players, recently won the Mansion Sports Hanoi Open Pool Championship in Vietnam.)
Shaw said “I don’t think Team Asia will have more momentum than us. We had a great run in the [Hanoi Championship in Vietnam] ourselves. When the fans are here and it’s a race to five, the pressure is on. You can play as good as you want and when you step out into that arena, forget about it.”

The Reyes Cup is a race to 11 points, like in the Mosconi Cup.
Unlike the Ryder Cup in golf where all scheduled matches are played to a finish, the Reyes Cup will conclude once a team reaches 11 points.
What is the format?
There will be five players on each team competing in a mix of doubles and singles matches, with each match being a first-to-five frames. The competition will be 9-ball pool, where the object ball is the lowest numbered ball on the table. The first team to pot the 9-ball wins.
