More than half of North America’s bats may soon be at risk of extinction, according to a new study.

The report fueled renewed calls from experts in Canada, the United States and Mexico encouraging international collaboration to provide bats with coordinated support and protection from disease and climate change.

The study, a companion to a 2023 report and published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, involved over 100 scientists who evaluated the conservation status of 153 bat species across North America and identified threats. The report was spearheaded by the North American Bat Conservation Alliance.

The scientists found that 53 percent of North American bats will be at moderate or high risk of extinction within 15 years. Almost all of the species they observed were estimated to have experienced population declines over the past 15 years.
