This tiny collection of islands are located just off the coast of Madagascar and are known for their tropical beaches.

Africa’s Comoros Islands are off the beaten path, with most people not having even heard of them.

Temperatures on the islands average 23C, with warm weather all year round – the turquoise water and the gentle breeze add to the tropical feel of the islands.

Comoros has remained quiet with barely any tourists heading to the country – many of its visitors are curiosity-seekers on a quest to visit every country in the world or keen to see the lesser-visited corners of the Earth.

For many, this is a large part of its appeal, however the islands don’t offer as much to tourists as some of the neighbouring areas, with those who do take a trip there wondering what there is to see there.

Moreover, the USA put travel advice in place for the islands earlier this year, stating that holidaymakers should travel there with increased caution.

The USA government announcement said: “Exercise increased caution in Comoros due to crime and civil unrest. Protests occur spontaneously in Comoros and are typically motivated by political factors. Most protests occur in Moroni, and some have turned violent. Protesters have also engaged in the destruction of property.”

The islands are a small group of volcanic islands in the Mozambique channel and three of the islands form the Union of the Comoros. With a total population of just 871,342, the islands are not densely populated.

One of the most popular beaches on the islands is Miringoni, Moheli. Moheli is a lesser-visited island but its beach is a tropical paradise. The beach is quiet and offers a relaxing day – you can also visit Miringoni which oozes character and charm.

Another beautiful beach is Chindini, Grande Comore. Loved by locals, this beach is surrounded by palm trees and is a hotspot for water activities. The beach is family friendly, and its shallow waters make it perfect for swimming.

The country’s capital, Moroni, means “at the river” – the city is home to a port, old buildings and a bustling community.

One of the most popular places to visit in the area is the Grand Mosque du Vendredi. The beautiful white building stands out among the cityscape.
