Bosnia and Herzegovina was not spared security challenges in 2024. The murder and wounding of police officers in Bosanska Krupa, which was characterized as a terrorist act, the presence of suspicious persons, bomb threats, numerous murders and arrests, migration, organized crime, smuggling and human trafficking. Geopolitical turmoil in the world, the war in the Middle East, and in Ukraine were also reflected in our country. However, the competent institutions assure that the security situation is under control.

Last year, attention was also drawn to the news of the Moldovan authorities that they had identified persons who were trained with the aim of carrying out a coup in Moldova, and that this training also took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The videos published by the Moldovan police showed alleged training sessions. According to information from the Commission for Supervision of the Work of the OSA, it was confirmed that, as stated, suspicious persons had been staying in BiH intermittently, but that there were no camps as described by the Moldovan security services.

Meanwhile, Aleksandar Bezrukovni, a Russian citizen who is on an international Interpol wanted list, was arrested in Bosanska Krupa.

Our country has been plagued by the problem of illegal migration, organized crime, smuggling and human trafficking for years. The completion of negotiations and the initialing of the agreement on operational activities carried out by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency – FRONTEX was another step in the fight against organized crime, smuggling and other phenomena arising from the issue of illegal migration that BiH is facing, although to a much lesser extent than it was previously during the height of the migrant crisis

On October 24, in the evening, a minor entered the police station in Bosanska Krupa, killed one police officer with a knife, and wounded another. The attack was characterized as a terrorist act. Last year was also marked by a series of shootings with tragic outcomes.

Several weeks of bomb threats, primarily in schools, mostly in the Sarajevo Canton, but also in other cities, have been disturbing the public. The situation has in some way paralyzed education in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnian souvenirs

Last year, there were also arrests of leading people in Bosnian security agencies and institutions. In Operation Tunnel 2, the Minister of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina Nenad Nešić was arrested. The case concerns corruption-related crimes that Nešić committed while he was the director of the RS Roads. He is suspected of corruption and money laundering.

The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina ordered a one-month detention for the Minister of State Security Nenad Nešić. Zoran Galić, who served as the deputy director of the State Investigation and Protection Agency, fled in July last year to avoid arrest on suspicion of committing serious crimes while he was the head of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Border Police. A few months later, the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina dismissed him from his duties in SIPA.

Currently, the Ministry of Security of BiH is headed by the Deputy Minister of Security of BiH, Ivica Bošnjak, who confirmed in our programs that everything is functioning in the ministry after the arrest of the minister.

It is essential to point out that support in maintaining a safe and stable environment in BiH is also provided by EUFOR, whose forces have been deployed in BiH since 2004, and whose mandate is extended every year by the United Nations Security Council.

In 2024, there was no serious talk on the table of BiH politicians about BiH’s NATO path, which is constantly being hindered by political representatives from Republika Srpska who do not dispute cooperation but do not want membership. The Chairperson of the BiH Presidency Željka Cvijanović met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels. At that time, Chairperson Cvijanović said that Bosnia and Herzegovina is committed to cooperation with NATO. Peace and security in BiH are important for the Alliance and the entire region, the NATO Secretary General underlined. At the end of last year, the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted the ANP Reform Program for 2023. The last time the Reform Program was sent to NATO was in 2022. The last time the Reform Program was sent to NATO was in 2022.

The position of political representatives from Republika Srpska on NATO is cooperation yes – membership no.

The secessionist rhetoric of Milorad Dodik, the President of RS, about the alleged secession of this entity was not absent in 2024. His threats provoked numerous reactions from politicians from BiH, but also from the international community, which reminded BiH politicians that the sovereignty and integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina is guaranteed by Dayton. With all the challenges, another year is behind us, BHRT writes.
