For many Indians, living and working in the United States is a long-held dream. With the promise of better career opportunities, higher quality of life, and access to world-class education and healthcare, it’s easy to see why many aspire to move to America.
One of the well-known routes to permanent residency is through a Green Card—the document that grants non-citizens the right to live and work in the U.S. permanently. Among the various ways to obtain a Green Card, the Diversity Visa Lottery, commonly referred to as the Green Card Lottery, stands out. But is it really a viable option for Indians?
What is the U.S. Green Card Lottery?
The U.S. Green Card Lottery is officially known as the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. Introduced in 1990, the program aims to promote immigration from countries with historically low levels of migration to the United States.

Applicants must also meet certain educational or work experience requirements. Specifically, they should have either a high school education (or its equivalent) or two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience.
Are Indians Eligible for the Green Card Lottery?
Unfortunately, Indian-born applicants are not eligible to participate in the DV Lottery. This is because India is among the countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. over the past five years. As a result, it does not qualify as a country with low immigration rates, and its citizens are excluded from the lottery.
However, if you were born in a country that is eligible for the DV Lottery—even if you are an Indian citizen—you may still be able to apply. For example, if your parents were temporary residents in India when you were born, and their country of origin qualifies, you might be eligible to enter the lottery based on your parents’ country of birth.

Since the Green Card Lottery is not an option for most Indians, it’s crucial to explore other routes that can lead to permanent residency in the U.S. Here are some of the most popular alternatives:
Employment-Based Green Cards
Employment-based immigration is one of the most common ways for Indians to obtain a Green Card. The U.S. offers five preference categories (EB-1 through EB-5) for employment-based Green Cards:
EB-1 (Priority Workers): This category is for individuals with extraordinary abilities in fields such as science, arts, education, business, or athletics. It also includes outstanding professors, researchers, and multinational executives.
EB-2 (Professionals with Advanced Degrees or Exceptional Ability): This category is suitable for professionals holding advanced degrees or individuals with exceptional abilities in their fields. Those seeking a National Interest Waiver can also apply under this category without needing an employer sponsor.
EB-3 (Skilled Workers, Professionals, and Other Workers): This category includes skilled workers with at least two years of experience, professionals with a bachelor’s degree, and other workers in occupations requiring less than two years of training.
Family-Sponsored Green Cards
If you have immediate family members who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, they can sponsor your Green Card application. Immediate relatives—such as spouses, unmarried children under 21, and parents of U.S. citizens—have higher priority and shorter waiting times compared to other family categories.
Investment-Based Green Cards (EB-5 Visa)
The EB-5 visa program offers a pathway to a Green Card for investors who are willing to invest a significant amount of capital in a new commercial enterprise in the U.S. and create or preserve at least ten full-time jobs for U.S. workers. While the investment requirement is high (currently $800,000 to $1,050,000, depending on the location of the investment), it provides a relatively faster route to permanent residency.
Student to Employment Pathway
Many Indians start their journey to a Green Card by studying in the U.S. on an F-1 student visa. After completing their education, they may work under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program or secure an H-1B work visa. With employer sponsorship, they can eventually apply for a Green Card under the employment-based categories.
Special Immigrant Visas
Certain individuals may qualify for a Green Card through special programs, such as the Special Immigrant Juvenile status or visas for religious workers. While these options are less common, they can be viable for those who meet specific criteria.
Is the Green Card Lottery the Best Option for You?
For individuals from eligible countries, the DV Lottery can be an excellent opportunity due to its simplicity and lack of financial or sponsorship requirements. However, since Indians are generally excluded from this program, other pathways like employment-based or family-sponsored Green Cards become more realistic options.
Given the long waiting times associated with certain employment and family categories (especially for Indian applicants), it’s essential to plan strategically and explore multiple routes.
