Movie sets run on carefully built schedules, million-dollar budgets, and a lot of trust between directors and their stars. Every so often, that trust breaks down while cameras are still rolling, and a production has to make an uncomfortable choice. Recasting a role after filming has already begun is expensive, awkward, and often the subject of Hollywood legend for decades afterward.
Some of these swaps happened because of injuries nobody could have predicted. Others came down to creative disagreements, scandal, or a director simply realizing the wrong person was standing in front of the camera. Here are seven cases where a production pulled the plug on one actor mid-shoot and handed the role to someone else entirely.
1. Eric Stoltz replaced by Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future
Long before Michael J. Fox became synonymous with Marty McFly, the role belonged to Eric Stoltz, who had already been filming for roughly a month and a half. On January 10, 1985, Eric Stoltz was fired from Back to the Future after a month of filming, making way for Michael J. Fox to take over as Marty McFly. The issue wasn’t his talent so much as his approach to the material.
