The phrase “one-hit wonder” tends to carry a little bit of pity with it, as if the story ends the moment the song drops off the charts. Most of the time, though, that’s just where the public stopped paying attention. Behind plenty of those singular chart-toppers are musicians who kept working, just somewhere the spotlight rarely reached, building careers that in some cases turned out to be more lucrative and more influential than the hit itself.
1. Toni Basil turned “Mickey” into a springboard for a choreography empire
Toni Basil is remembered for one song, the double-platinum 1982 hit “Mickey,” but she was already a working dancer and choreographer for nearly two decades before that record ever charted. Basil was 38 when her hit song was released as a single, and she’d been working as a dancer for nearly 20 years by that point. Before “Mickey” she had already logged serious credits, having been hired as an assistant choreographer on the Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret classic “Viva Las Vegas.”
The bigger surprise is what came after the fame faded.
