There’s a particular kind of commitment that goes beyond memorizing lines or hitting a mark. Some performances demand an actor become something they simply weren’t before the cameras rolled, whether that means picking up an instrument, mastering a physical discipline, or rewiring the way they speak. Natalie Portman had taken ballet lessons as a child, but nothing close to the level required to play a professional dancer in Darren Aronofsky’s 2010 psychological thriller. A year ahead of filming, she did two hours of ballet a day, then started cross-training along with three hours of ballet, and two months before filming began working with choreographer Benjamin Millepied. By the final stretch, the training had become almost unrecognizable from where she started.
