Some films just leave you wanting more. They set up a bigger world, hint at unfinished stories, or build such a devoted following that a follow-up feels inevitable. Yet for reasons ranging from disappointing box office numbers to shifting studio priorities, plenty of genuinely good movies never got the second chapter fans expected. Here are eight films that seemed destined for a sequel, only for that promise to quietly fade away.
1. John Carter (2012)
Andrew Stanton’s adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom novels was meant to launch a full trilogy. After the release of John Carter in 2012, director Andrew Stanton planned a trilogy, but it was cancelled after the film bombed at the box office. The financial numbers were brutal for a project this size, and they made a sequel almost impossible to justify.
John Carter cost a whopping 303 million dollars to produce, and in return made 284 million dollars, a colossal flop that lost Disney a ton of money. Stanton had already mapped out the next two chapters, with the third movie set to be called Warlord of Mars. Disney lost the rights to the property in 2014, and all hope for the sequels was lost.
