Live television has a way of exposing exactly what nobody wants exposed. A camera keeps rolling, a question lands wrong, and suddenly millions of people are watching two adults try to figure out how to end a conversation gracefully. Some of these moments faded quickly. Others became permanent fixtures of pop culture, replayed for decades whenever someone needs an example of an interview gone sideways.
Tom Cruise and Matt Lauer talk psychiatry on Today

In June 2005, Tom Cruise sat down with Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today show to promote War of the Worlds, and the conversation turned into something else entirely. Cruise’s attempt to school Matt Lauer on Scientology principles and psychiatry led to a tense exchange lasting over five minutes. The exchange grew heated after Lauer pressed Cruise about his earlier comments criticizing Brooke Shields for using antidepressants during postpartum depression.
Cruise got heated when host Matt Lauer questioned him about his criticism of Brooke Shields, and at one point insisted Lauer did not “know the history of psychiatry.” The clip became so notorious that Lauer himself later called it his most uncomfortable interview ever, and Cruise eventually admitted he wished he had handled the moment differently.
