Most debut singles are treated like a first impression: a quick pitch to see if a band or artist is worth anyone’s time. Some land immediately and fade just as fast. Others barely register at first, only to come back years later and outlast almost everything released around them.
What follows are eight debut singles that took the long road to becoming classics. Some flopped outright. Others succeeded quietly before growing into something much bigger. All of them ended up mattering more with time than they did on the day they were released.
1. Creep – Radiohead (1992)
“Creep” met with little success in the UK when it was first released in September 1992, with BBC Radio 1 finding the song too depressing and refusing to play it, and the single reaching only number 78 on the UK chart while selling about 6,000 copies. It looked, for a moment, like a one and done failure for a band nobody outside a small circle had heard of yet.
Then something unexpected happened overseas. Toward the end of 1992, a DJ named Yoav Kutner began playing “Creep” incessantly on Israeli radio after being introduced to it by a local EMI representative, and the song soon became a national hit there. By 1993, the song had reached number two on the US Billboard Alternative chart and number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100, and a reissue eventually pushed it into the UK top ten.
