Hollywood has never been too concerned with math. Characters roll into frame with penthouse views, closets full of designer labels, and cars that cost more than most people’s houses, all while working jobs that, in reality, barely cover rent. It’s a quiet little lie the movies tell us over and over, and most of us just go along with it because the story is more fun that way.
Still, it’s worth pulling back the curtain on a few of the biggest offenders. These are characters whose paychecks, based on their stated professions, simply do not match the life on screen. Some are meant to be jokes about aspiration, others are just lazy writing, but all of them would struggle badly with an actual budget spreadsheet.
1. Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City
Carrie writes a single weekly newspaper column and somehow affords a rent-stabilized Manhattan apartment stuffed with Manolo Blahnik heels that regularly ran several hundred dollars a pair in the show’s era. Freelance newspaper columnists, even successful ones, were never paid enough to sustain a shoe collection like that alongside city rent, dinners out, and constant taxi rides. The show even joked about it directly, with Carrie at one point realizing she’d spent tens of thousands of dollars on shoes over the years while having no savings.
