It’s early on a Tuesday morning in September when Michael Whiteman enters the eating room of the Brooklyn townhouse he shares together with his spouse, Rozanne Gold. Gold has set the desk of their high-ceilinged lounge. On the mantel sits a Mexican tree of life. On the wall, a Nineteenth-century Buddhist shrine; on the desk, a nonetheless life–excellent unfold. “Right here’s a few of Michael’s bread,” Gold says. “Some berries, a Genovese cake I type of made up, some holey Swiss cheese, butter. And, oh, have you ever had my Venetian Wine Cake? It is a cake with a narrative.”
Previously the chef for Mayor Ed Koch, Gold is a poet and four-time James Beard Award–profitable cookbook creator. Now she works as a dying doula and Jungian psychoanalyst. However the story of the Venetian Wine Cake must wait. Gold has to expire to see a consumer, and I’m right here to talk to Whiteman, who, at 88, is the final surviving member of the unique workforce that opened Home windows on the World.
