1. “Come On Eileen” – Dexys Midnight Runners
Few songs sound as strange on paper and as irresistible in practice as this one. The song will fit nicely in an ’80s music time capsule, but it sounded nothing like the other hits of the era, with no synthesizers but banjo, accordion, fiddle and saxophone instead. The song reached No. 1 in the United States on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the week ending 23 April 1983.
What makes its story even more remarkable is what it knocked off the top spot. “Come on Eileen” prevented Michael Jackson from ever having back-to-back number one hits in the US, since “Billie Jean” was the number one single the previous week, while “Beat It” was the number one song the following week.
