Podcasts were never supposed to become prestige television. They’re intimate, low budget, often just a voice in your ear during a commute, and that intimacy seemed impossible to translate to the screen. Yet over the past several years, a handful of producers took that risk anyway, turning scripted audio dramas and true crime investigations into full blown TV series with movie stars attached.
Some of these adaptations felt like gambles from the start. A story built entirely on sound design and narration doesn’t automatically need faces, sets, or a camera. Still, several of these shows found a way to work, and looking back at how they got there says a lot about what makes a story worth retelling in a new medium.
1. Homecoming
Homecoming is based on Bloomberg and Horowitz’s two-season, 12 episode podcast for Gimlet Media, which centers on Heidi Bergman, a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center. When Amazon picked it up with Julia Roberts and director Sam Esmail attached, skepticism made sense. A quiet, dialogue-driven audio drama seemed like an odd match for a director known for the frantic visual style of Mr. Robot.
It worked anyway, partly because Esmail leaned into unease rather than fighting it, using split screens and unsettling framing to mirror the podcast’s paranoid tone. The series plays out in familiar fashion for those who listened to the podcast first, with an opening episode that’s almost…
