Some stories seem impossible to translate to the screen, at least on the first few tries. Studios chase the rights, directors get attached and drop out, and fans wait through disappointing attempts that never quite capture what made the book special in the first place. Then, sometimes twenty, thirty, even ninety years later, someone finally figures it out.
1. Dune by Frank Herbert
Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel had a reputation for being unfilmable long before anyone actually tried. In 1965, Frank Herbert, a journalist and ecological consultant, wrote a science fiction masterwork that not only transcended speculative fiction but also went on to inspire countless other books and movies. Alejandro Jodorowsky attempted a version in the 1970s that never got made, and David Lynch made an impressive looking, but pretty incoherent, film in 1984.
Denis Villeneuve finally cracked it in 2021, splitting the story across two films to give it room to breathe. The film was released on October 21, 2021, to positive reviews, going on to be nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, ultimately winning six. Its sequel, covering the second half of the novel, was released on March 1, 2024, to critical acclaim, proving the wait had been worth it.
