Hollywood casting decisions rarely stay quiet for long, and some of the biggest recastings in film and TV history happened after cameras had already started rolling. An actor lands a dream part, shows up to set, and within days or weeks finds out someone else is taking over. It sounds brutal, and often it is, but in a strange number of cases the replacement actor went on to define the role so completely that audiences forget anyone else was ever considered.
What follows are nine well documented cases where a firing reshaped a project’s future, sometimes for the person who got fired, and almost always for the person who stepped in.
1. Eric Stoltz lost Marty McFly to Michael J. Fox
Eric Stoltz spent weeks filming Marty McFly before Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale concluded that his dramatic approach wasn’t working with the comedy they wanted. Stoltz had been the studio’s original pick after Michael J. Fox proved unavailable due to his commitments on Family Ties, and by most accounts he treated the role with real seriousness, maybe too much of it for a time travel comedy about a teenager and his DeLorean.
Production restarted with Michael J. Fox, whose performance became inseparable from the movie. It’s genuinely hard to picture Back to the Future working with anyone else in the lead now, which says a lot about how right that midstream swap turned out to be.
