When “Same Love” arrived in 2012, it wasn’t a typical love song built for weddings. It was written as an argument for marriage equality, and that made it politically charged in a way radio programmers weren’t always comfortable with. The song was unofficially adopted as an anthem by supporters of legalizing same-sex marriage, particularly in reference to a Washington state referendum to legalize same-sex marriage.
The pushback wasn’t limited to the United States either. Two Australian radio stations abruptly cut a live feed of a Macklemore performance at a sports event when he began to sing the song, with the stations carrying coverage of the event cutting away from the performance entirely. Despite that resistance, the song went on to become a genuine hit, and today it’s a common choice for first dances, especially at same-sex weddings where its message carries extra weight.
