There’s a strange kind of magic trick happening every time you watch a movie set on the streets of Manhattan. More often than you’d guess, that skyline isn’t Manhattan at all. It’s Toronto, dressed up, digitally tweaked, and sometimes barely disguised, standing in for a city it has doubled for since the 1980s.

The reasons are practical rather than mysterious. Toronto offers dense downtown blocks, a mix of old brick and glass towers, and production incentives that make it cheaper to shoot there than in New York itself. Over the decades, this arrangement has produced a long list of films where the story says “New York” but the crew call sheet says “Ontario.”

Mary Harron’s pitch black satire follows Wall Street banker Patrick Bateman through a world of business cards, reservations at trendy restaurants, and quiet homicidal rage, all supposedly happening in late 1980s Manhattan. Old Town Toronto was a frequent hangout spot for wealthy New York investment banker and serial killer Patrick Bateman in 2000’s American Psycho, starring Christian Bale and set in New York City in the 1980s. The production leaned heavily on the city’s financial district to sell the illusion.
