Animation still gets filed under “for kids” far too often, even though plenty of the medium’s strongest work was never meant for a children’s matinee. Some of these films deal with war, exile, memory and grief. Others simply trust grown viewers to sit with ambiguity.
The eight below are films that critics and adult audiences keep returning to, and each earned real recognition from major festivals or awards bodies. Here they are, in no particular order.
Spirited Away

Hayao Miyazaki’s 2001 fantasy follows a young girl who stumbles into a spirit world and has to work in a bathhouse to free her parents. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the 2003 ceremony. It also took the top prize, the Golden Bear, at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2002.
Adults tend to appreciate it for what it leaves unexplained. The story hints at greed, identity and the pressure of work without lecturing about any of them. It’s a film that seems to change a little each time you watch it at a different age.
Grave of the Fireflies

Isao Takahata’s 1988 film from Studio Ghibli follows two siblings trying to survive in Japan near the end of the Second World War. It’s based on a semi autobiographical story by Akiyuki Nosaka. Few animated films are as plainly devastating.
Many viewers say they can only handle it once, and they mean that as praise. The film refuses to soften…
